Blues Drumming - Drum Lessons Online

 What is blues drumming?

If you were to ask six people off the street, you would probably get a different answer from all of them, but there is an obvious answer which most people would be familiar with the term R&B, which to my knowledge originated from African American musicians in the nineteen forties.

As time moved on there have been many different interpretations, and variations of this type of music.

But if your desire is to learn how to play blues drumming then the basics are very simple and that’s why many drummers are unable to play the blues.

I have often wondered why when drummers sit down at drum kit all they want to do is to display their chops and playing the blues is nothing to do with that.

If you study bands that play the blues the drummers roll is to lay down a good steady grove without slowing down or speeding up that is all that is required in most cases. However that is where the problems start.

It never ceases to amaze me today how many drummers today are unable to keep time.

In my opinion keeping good time is essential technique to master as a drummer. However this is not just drummers all musicians today should practice a click track.

What is a click track?

The old fashioned word for a click track is a metronome to put it into plain and simple terms is a machine that keeps perfect time.

Why would anybody want to learn to play the drums with a click track?

If were to turn the clock back in time say to the sixties seventies or even the eighties live music was king full orchestras were performing everywhere. However in today’s world that has sadly changed and often music shows are substituted by the use of backing tracks and that is why it is essential for all musicians to be able to play with click track.

This is not a negative treat as a positive make a friend of the click track and you will get to enjoy it and it will really help your blues drumming.

I have a Roland TD8 that I use for practice and even when I am practicing rudiments I always practice with the click track.
