If you are just
starting out and have never played the drums before then here are a few tips to get under way.
In order to play any musical instrument the most important thing is to practice
on a regular basis. Set up a routine on a daily basis even if it is only 15 minutes a day. Don’t fall into
the trap of practicing 2 hours one day and nothing for a week that is it not the way
forward.
Do I need to spend a load of money on a drum kit?
The trap that many people
fall into is they decide they want to play the drums and go out and buy a full drum kit. I realise that is
tempting but not practical. There are many aspects to take into consideration. For example: When you practice
drums as you can imagine it makes a considerable amount of noise. The last thing you want to do is drive the
neighbours crazy right? So when you are starting out get yourself a practice kit.
What is a practice kit?
Basically a practice kit is a
set of rubber pads set up just like a drum kit. It makes very little noise and is very cost effective. This may
not sound very exciting however it’s a great way to get started without driving the neighbours crazy. A further
advantage is if you decide that drumming does not suit you then you have not spent your life savings on a drum
kit that may gather dust in the loft.
What about electronic drum
kits are they a help?
If you are really serious about playing the drums then yes electronic
drums for practicing are amazing in fact I advise all my students to buy electronic drum kits if they can
afford it. The reason being you can practice with head phones and get real drum and cymbal sounds just like a
drum kit.
Why would I need a real drum kit?
I am a big fan of electronic
drum kits for practice only. There is nothing like an acoustic drum kit.
If and when you start to do
gigs and play with a band electronic drums kits in my opinion just can’t handle the job. However many drummers
on big gigs with a big sound system use a combination of the two.
Are drumming lessons important?
If you can find a good
teacher then yes they are very important. However it is very important not get lessons from some guy that has
only been playing a couple of years and not qualified to teach. Unfortunately there are many people out there
not qualified to provide drumming lessons.
Online today I have found some very cost effective ways to learn to play the drums if you are
